Health Nugget 💪

Nutrition is guided by a DNA test. Genopalate is one popular direct-to-consumer (DTC) website that offers this.

I wrote this thread on Twitter and go a little in-depth on its benefit and downsides. I think it’s a good tool in the medical arsenal to help people along their health journey.

One thing I don’t mention is the vulnerability & privacy of such companies in exchange for your DNA results.

MyHeritage was hacked in 2017 breaching 92 million accounts. They could have theoretically

  • Sold back DNA for ransom.

  • This data could be sold on the down-low or monetized to insurance companies

  • Police place into DNA vault, add for future use

  • Employers( This new hire has risk of Parkinson’s disease, don’t schedule the interview)

Another example is 23andMe shared user data GlaxoSmithKline for use in developing drugs.

According to consumer reports,>80% of 23andMe customers do opt into “research” allowing their data to be used. This term “research” in some cases is a blanket for whatever they feel like using your DNA information for. Sometimes.

Useful web applications 🎊

Bionic Reading and Jiffy reader: Upload your own file here and try it yourself. I think it is good in theory but it’s unlikely to be implemented mainstream. Might be good for difficult to read literature or journal articles.

Yep: Creates your landing page at blazing fast speed and has analytics! Looks simple but is made with care.

Physical item recommendation ⌛️

La Gritona: Reposado Tequila that is distilled by Melly Barajas and her staff of women at her small distillery in Valle De Guadalupe, Jalisco. Bottle an average of 12,500 liters per batch. All of the agave remnants that are left over after production are given to local farmers to use as cattle feed. The bottles are hand blown with recycled Mexican glass in Zapopan, an hour away from the distillery.

This is my go-to tequila for margaritas and almost everything else. Try it and LMK when you think.

Random Musings 🎰

If you want to be a milk connoisseur read this Alicia Kennedy. Some interesting snippets:

  • Almond milk dates back to at least 1226

  • Soy milk came onto the documented scene in 1365

Go out and do great things,

Martin
