I was doing heart surgery the other day and started at ~7 am and finished around 5 pm. I woke up early enough to drink coffee and eat oatmeal. Otherwise, I hadn't eaten the entire time.

When I got home I was cranky. I thought to myself why? I realized no duh! you haven't eaten most of the day.

Some of us fast or like me don't get to eat until later for various reasons. I wanted to know what happens in our bodies to make us "hangry."

Action to water your health

Everyone has been "hangry" at one point or another. But did you notice how it impacted you?

  • ↑ Impulsivity

  • ↑ aggressivness

  • ↑ anger

  • ↑ irritable

  • ↑ stress

Regulatory depletion hypothesis. Negative, high arousal emotions or outbursts of aggression when hungry occur because individuals cannot regulate their feelings without sufficient blood glucose.

This was one theory into why we get negative, high-arousal emotions and aggression when hungry.

🧬 Ghrelin. A hunger hormone. But it also does so much more. When you don't eat for a long period of time glucose drops and ghrelin is released. This triggers a cascade of hormones, such as cortisol, that act on the sympathetic nervous system and induces unpleasant, highly arousing affective bodily changes.

You start feeling like crap.

Enter, Misattribution theory. I'm not hungry I'm made at:

  • That person that cut me off

  • That dog barking

  • That person talking really loud

Literally, anything and anyone is fair game other than what is happening. You're shifting the hunger onto something/someone else.

Fasting. I was going to discuss this but wow! the amout of information is insane. I'll just leave it at this.

We know for sure that when you’ve fasted or when you have low amounts of complex carbohydrates in your system, your alertness is going to go up. Fasting increases alertness and epinephrine for the sole purpose of getting you to go out and find food.

So if you find yourself "hangry" don't let the monster out. Eat a healthy snack and carry on. I know, duh! right? but these things can be subtle. You won't even realize it.

Sea moss consumption is everywhere. From gummies to pills. It has many benefits but also many drawbacks. One is it can absorb heavy metals, so large consumption can be toxic.
